Movies
Life Is Beautiful (1998) Directed by: Roberto Benigni Starring: Roberto Benigni, Nicoletta Braschi, Giorgio Cantarini, Giustino Durano
A truly beautiful and inspirational film. Brings back the child in all of us and reminds us to live in the moment or put in another way “carpe diem” (seize the day). “Life is Beautiful” is an amazing story of total selfless love. The courage and strength for which the main character strives throughout the film is a message in charity. We should all seek to carry ourselves in such loving virtue. Watch this film when you think your world is falling apart and there is nothing to be happy about. I will assure you that all your problems will pale by comparison.
Scarface (1983) Directed by: Brian De Palma Starring: Al Pacino, Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth
This masterpiece set the tone for every gangster or gangster wannabe, in movies and rap music. How can you hate a movie that has a line like, “OK Montana, how'd you get that scar on your face?” “Oh this ...eating pineapple”. Al Pacino’s charisma is incredible in this movie. Despite the anti-hero he plays, you can't help but to cheer for him to go further and further, become larger than life. Tony Montana is a cinematic icon as well as the American Dream gone dark.
Music
Café Del Mar: Volume 6 By Various Artists
Based mainly on ambient hip-hop sounds, Cafe Del Mar Vol. 6 is the definitive sound of beauty, and takes you on a trip that at times is emotionally wrenching, yet optimistic at the same time. The album as a whole is wonderfully poignant and mellow. Each song flows cleanly and rythmically to the next. From Talvin Singh’s “Traveller” to Jose’s own “Adios Ayer”, this album is perfect for any intimate moment, whether it be with a loved one or by yourself.
Books
A Manual For Living By Epictetus
The truelly amazing thing about this book is it contains so much wisdom in so few words. Epictetus’ writings are incredibly similar to many self-improvement and psychology books of today. He realised that people were and still are in search of the same thing today that they strived for two thousand years ago: happiness, accomplishing goals, fulfillment and possessing a sense of worth, among others. This short book contains concise and easy to verify life's truths which enhance our joy of everyday life.
The Art of Worldly Wisdom By Baltasar Gracian
Gracian’s book is just phenomenal, as he displays a superb understanding of human nature. He gives us a compilation of realistic and ethical insights about the foibles of human relations. His insights have been justly copied and rewritten over time, because they are universal in nature. This book is intended to be read and reread and must be digested little by little in order to fully extract its many messages.
The Magic Of Thinking Big By David Schwartz
This is an all time classic. “The Magic of Thinking Big” gives you simple and easy steps to follow to get you to think big things, and then do big things. Schwartz’s wisdom echoes all the greats and if you're committed to living your highest and biggest life, then this book is a must read for you. Applying the principles taught in this book can literally change your life.
The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius Antonius By Caesar Marcus Aurelius Antoninus Augustus
Marcus Aurelius’ “Meditations” is a celebrated work composed by one of Imperial Rome’s most celebrated leaders. While at times a bit challenging to get through, the work has an impressive quality that is partly a collection of life-lessons and partly a discourse on the psychology of mankind and government. Marcus Aurelius is the epitamy of the old wise man. His insight into life is both deep and profound and I highly recommend this book to all who want to learn to look within (and without) in a more effective way.
Tuesdays with Morrie: An Old Man, a Young Man, and Life's Greatest Lesson By Mitch Albom
This is a simple book with simple messages. Tuesdays with Morrie takes the reader on a journey of one mans life which is affected by another from his glorious youthful past. This book has had more impact on my life than anything else I’ve ever read, by far. It’s a reminder to appreciate the simple, little things in life. That when you’re dead, the things you've accumulated and the things you’ve done will disappear. What will remain is the ways that you've affected or touched other people. Live fully and in the moment. Treat others with respect, kindness, love, and dignity. Seek joy. I don't think anyone doesn’t already know that life is short, family and friends are more important than material possessions, etc, but it’s still good to be reminded. Enjoy it for what it is: a simple story of a man facing death with a positive perspective.
